Bridging Heritage Language Learners in their Academic Language Development
Wednesday September 11, 2024 9:30am - 10:40am CDT
This session will support educators in bridging their understanding of how to assist Heritage Language Learners in their development of academic language. Heritage Language Learners (HLLs) (Valdes, 2000) are our students that have a cultural and linguistic connection to a language/s other than English due to their family background. Participants will be provided with information and tools to effectively develop HLL’s proficiency in academic contexts while maintaining their linguistic and cultural identities.

Read, Rede, Reed, or Red? How Misspellings Inform Instruction
Wednesday September 11, 2024 9:30am - 10:40am CDT
"Just use a mirror, look at your mouth, and make your mouth look like mine", I'd say as students misspelled words in their journals. As a teacher in elementary, middle, and high schools, I was proud of the knowledge I gained to support students' phonological spelling errors. I quickly learned, however, that there was so much more to consider! Join this session to explore the importance of articulatory gestures, orthographic patterns, morphemes, and semantics/syntax when responding to students' misspellings. We'll have fun while learning how to 'work smarter, not harder'

Teaching with Specificity in Mind: A Case Study Approach
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
During the past few years, renewed interest in research led to improved professional development for all literacy stakeholders. With so much knowledge shared, how is a teacher supposed to know what to do, when, for whom, and for how long? Join Dr. Tolman as she uses a case study approach to discuss the importance of drilling down to teach with specificity. As we look through the lens of data analysis, it will allow us to work smarter, not harder!

The Power of How: Maximizing Practice through Instructional Routines to Increase Student Learning and Mastery
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
This session provides research that underpins the power of instructional routines to maximize student learning. Using explicit instructional routines empowers teachers in providing a seamless flow in delivering a lesson. Instructional routines embed opportunities for students to respond, guided practice with feedback, and immediate error correction. Students can focus on the content to be learned rather than the task, leading to increased student learning. Instructional routines related to word recognition with embedded practice opportunities for participants are modeled and practiced. The design and delivery of this session places an emphasis on translating research-to-practice for practitioners. Participants leave with a toolkit of instructional resources.

Syntax and Cohesive Ties: Missing Links in Comprehension and Written Expression
Wednesday September 11, 2024 1:30pm - 2:40pm CDT
It is well-documented that background knowledge and vocabulary are two essential components for comprehending what we hear, what we read, and what we write. Often overlooked, however, is the importance of syntax, or sentence structure, and cohesive ties, the 'glue' authors use to tie ideas together within and between sentences. Transition words and pronoun referents lead this important work in a reciprocal manner: what we can write improves what we can understand when we read. Dr. Tolman's session will clarify the 'why', 'what', and 'how' of syntax instruction, exploring how direct lessons and pre-planning lead to improved reading comprehension and writing.

Beginning with the End in Mind: Planning More Impactful Elementary Interventions
Wednesday September 11, 2024 3:00pm - 4:10pm CDT
At the end of the day, we want our students to become accurate, fluent, motivated readers who comprehend at a deep level.  With the best of intentions, our interventions can sometimes get a little too narrow, too slow paced, and (can we say it?) even a little un-inspiring for the very students who struggle to want to read.  So, how do we address those deficit foundational skills and keep our eyes on the prize?  This interactive session will give you a fresh perspective on intervention planning and you will leave with tools to re-imagine your groups for the next week! The Powerpoint Presentation will be uploaded immediately after the presentation.

Beyond the Flashcard: Foundations and Practices for Building a Large Sight Word Vocabulary for Students
Wednesday September 11, 2024 3:00pm - 4:10pm CDT
Developing a large sight word vocabulary depends upon orthographic mapping, “a process that involves the formation of letter-sound connections to bond the spelling, pronunciations, and meanings of specific words in memory. It explains how children learn to read by sight, to spell words from memory, and to acquire vocabulary words from print.” (Ehri, 2014). This session will review orthographic mapping and instructional practices that result in student engagement in this essential connection forming process. In addition, terms that are often confused: high frequency words, irregular words and sight words will be clarified. Best practices in structured literacy instruction and instructional routines for teaching high frequency words will be shared to facilitate the orthographic mapping process and increase students’ sight word vocabulary.
