How to Implement Interventions & Progress Monitoring for Behavior & Social- Emotional Learning
Wednesday September 11, 2024 8:00am - 9:10am CDT
Addressing behavior and social-emotional learning needs is crucial for the well-being and academic success of students. Come and learn how using a structured approach like the Individual Problem Solving Process can provide a framework for educators to effectively support students in these areas. We will examine data-driven decision-making and progress monitoring procedures so that attendees can ensure interventions are targeted and responsive to students' specific needs. Practicing these strategies during the session will enable you to support student needs and create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.  This session is geared toward intermediate learners who have a basic MTSS foundation for behavior and social-emotional learning in place..

Our Journey Through the Developing Nervous System and the Impact on Behaviors
Wednesday September 11, 2024 8:00am - 9:10am CDT
In this presentation, we will explore how our nervous systems are impacted by adversity, trauma, and experiences of resiliency through deepened connections and sensory regulation. Behaviors are only signals or indicators that the brain and body are struggling in survival states of functioning. In our time together, we will explore how we get out in front of the behavior through our procedures, routines, and transitions. All audiences and learning levels are welcome to this session.

Amplifying School Climate: Empowering Engagement and Student Voice
Wednesday September 11, 2024 9:30am - 10:40am CDT
Delve into the transformative power of fostering a positive school climate through empowering engagement. As the educational landscape evolves rapidly, it's imperative to create environments where students feel not only heard but also valued contributors to their own learning journey. We'll see how Kansas data specifically shows the connection between engagement -- student voice and agency -- and achievement on state assessments. Through a structured activity you will also glean each other's wisdom about strategies you're using to address your climate data in ways designed to leverage the outcomes that we all want for Kansas students.

Connections over Compliance: Rewiring our Perceptions of Discipline through an Educator and Leadership Lens
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
We will explore discipline protocols from the lens of neuroscience. We will address specific shifts within the traditional and brain-aligned models and practices. We will begin to understand that traditional discipline works the best for kids who need it the least and works the least for kids who need it the most. When we are dysregulated, our brains do not respond to words, lectures, consequences, or rewards.  Relational discipline is not something we do to children, it is something we want to create within them. All audiences and learning levels are welcome to this session. Leaders and administrators will appreciate the tips and resources.

Reaching Children with Challenging Behavior Through Function Based Thinking Part 1: Problems with Punishment
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
Function based thinking is a behavioral science concept that is an integral component of an effective Multi-Tiered System of Behavior Support. It empowers all educators to provide behavior support more efficiently to all students by considering the purpose(s) challenging behavior(s) serve and what is reinforcing them.  Research has consistently shown that traditional “discipline” practices that are solely punitive such as verbal reprimands, timeout, suspension, and expulsion are not effective and often make challenging behavior worse.   Rather than staying stuck in the cycle of problem-punish-problem-punish with little to no success, educational staff need to understand the behavior science behind this phenomenon and use this knowledge to guide more effective and consistent instructional responses to challenging behavior.

Voice & Aspirations: Balancing Dreaming & Doing to Reach Your Fullest Potential
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
In schools, we often challenge our students to dream big. Yet simply dreaming is not enough. Aspirations is defined as the ability to dream and set goals for the future while being inspired in the present to reach those dreams. This session will examine strategies for supporting students who are in a state of Hibernation, Imagination, and Perspiration, with the goal of helping all students achieve their Aspirations. Participants will consider how to attain a healthy balance of dreaming and doing, and how to help students realize that they must use their voices to take action and achieve their aspirations.
