Connections over Compliance: Rewiring our Perceptions of Discipline through an Educator and Leadership Lens
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
We will explore discipline protocols from the lens of neuroscience. We will address specific shifts within the traditional and brain-aligned models and practices. We will begin to understand that traditional discipline works the best for kids who need it the least and works the least for kids who need it the most. When we are dysregulated, our brains do not respond to words, lectures, consequences, or rewards.  Relational discipline is not something we do to children, it is something we want to create within them. All audiences and learning levels are welcome to this session. Leaders and administrators will appreciate the tips and resources.

Reaching Children with Challenging Behavior Through Function Based Thinking Part 1: Problems with Punishment
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
Function based thinking is a behavioral science concept that is an integral component of an effective Multi-Tiered System of Behavior Support. It empowers all educators to provide behavior support more efficiently to all students by considering the purpose(s) challenging behavior(s) serve and what is reinforcing them.  Research has consistently shown that traditional “discipline” practices that are solely punitive such as verbal reprimands, timeout, suspension, and expulsion are not effective and often make challenging behavior worse.   Rather than staying stuck in the cycle of problem-punish-problem-punish with little to no success, educational staff need to understand the behavior science behind this phenomenon and use this knowledge to guide more effective and consistent instructional responses to challenging behavior.

Mathematical Fluency across the Grades
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
Mathematics is a hierarchical subject, the ability to learn more advanced concepts or procedures is predictable based on prior learning. In order to prepare students and ensure success with future math content, educators must ensure that fluency is achieved in what will someday become a prerequisite skill.  For example, students that are fluent with whole numbers will be able to generalize and adapt that knowledge to rational numbers. This session will dig deeply into the importance of fluency, and teachers will walk away with instructional strategies to support building fluency in their classrooms.

The Power of How: Maximizing Practice through Instructional Routines to Increase Student Learning and Mastery
Wednesday September 11, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
This session provides research that underpins the power of instructional routines to maximize student learning. Using explicit instructional routines empowers teachers in providing a seamless flow in delivering a lesson. Instructional routines embed opportunities for students to respond, guided practice with feedback, and immediate error correction. Students can focus on the content to be learned rather than the task, leading to increased student learning. Instructional routines related to word recognition with embedded practice opportunities for participants are modeled and practiced. The design and delivery of this session places an emphasis on translating research-to-practice for practitioners. Participants leave with a toolkit of instructional resources.

Kansas MTSS & KESA 2.0: Enhancing Outcomes Through Collaborative Engagement
Wednesday September 11, 2024 1:30pm - 2:40pm CDT
Within the realm of education, it is critical to acquire knowledge of the foundational aspects that form the basis of operations and initiatives. These include grasping the essential fundamentals, understanding the intricate structures in place, recognizing lead indicators that guide decision-making, and assessing the measures of progress, all of which are encompassed in the comprehensive KESA 2.0 framework.

Delving deeper into the subject matter, it becomes imperative to examine how each structural component is delineated and expounded upon by the Kansas State Department of Education. This involves gaining a thorough understanding of the nuances and intricacies embedded in each structure, as elucidated by KSDE.

Furthermore, it is crucial to explore how these structures are bolstered and reinforced through collaborative efforts and engagements with key entities such as the Kansas Multi-Tier System of Supports and Alignment initiative. By delving into these collaborative endeavors, you will gain insights into the interconnectedness and interdependence of various educational frameworks and systems, thereby fostering a more holistic and coherent approach to enhancing educational outcomes and experiences.

Supporting Students’ Acquisition of Fractions Computation using a Concrete-Representation-Abstract (CRA) Model
Wednesday September 11, 2024 1:30pm - 2:40pm CDT
Teaching anything related to fractions is difficult, especially when students have not built fluency with whole numbers. This means that extra support may be necessary to help students acquire the concepts and procedures needed to work with fractions. The Concrete-Representation-Abstract (CRA) sequence of instruction allows educators to preplan scaffolded supports that guide students towards abstract understanding during the acquisition stage of learning.  This session will provide teachers with an explicit, set-based model for computing with fractions that they can use during core instruction or intervention to support students’ learning.

Syntax and Cohesive Ties: Missing Links in Comprehension and Written Expression
Wednesday September 11, 2024 1:30pm - 2:40pm CDT
It is well-documented that background knowledge and vocabulary are two essential components for comprehending what we hear, what we read, and what we write. Often overlooked, however, is the importance of syntax, or sentence structure, and cohesive ties, the 'glue' authors use to tie ideas together within and between sentences. Transition words and pronoun referents lead this important work in a reciprocal manner: what we can write improves what we can understand when we read. Dr. Tolman's session will clarify the 'why', 'what', and 'how' of syntax instruction, exploring how direct lessons and pre-planning lead to improved reading comprehension and writing.

Beyond the Flashcard: Foundations and Practices for Building a Large Sight Word Vocabulary for Students
Wednesday September 11, 2024 3:00pm - 4:10pm CDT
Developing a large sight word vocabulary depends upon orthographic mapping, “a process that involves the formation of letter-sound connections to bond the spelling, pronunciations, and meanings of specific words in memory. It explains how children learn to read by sight, to spell words from memory, and to acquire vocabulary words from print.” (Ehri, 2014). This session will review orthographic mapping and instructional practices that result in student engagement in this essential connection forming process. In addition, terms that are often confused: high frequency words, irregular words and sight words will be clarified. Best practices in structured literacy instruction and instructional routines for teaching high frequency words will be shared to facilitate the orthographic mapping process and increase students’ sight word vocabulary.

Read, Rede, Reed, or Red? How Misspellings Inform Instruction
Thursday September 12, 2024 8:00am - 9:10am CDT
"Just use a mirror, look at your mouth, and make your mouth look like mine", I'd say as students misspelled words in their journals. As a teacher in elementary, middle, and high schools, I was proud of the knowledge I gained to support students' phonological spelling errors. I quickly learned, however, that there was so much more to consider! Join this session to explore the importance of articulatory gestures, orthographic patterns, morphemes, and semantics/syntax when responding to students' misspellings. We'll have fun while learning how to 'work smarter, not harder'!

Reaching Children with Challenging Behavior Through Function Based Thinking Part 1: Problems with Punishment
Thursday September 12, 2024 9:30am - 10:40am CDT

Supporting Students’ Acquisition of Fractions Computation using a Concrete-Representation-Abstract (CRA) Model
Thursday September 12, 2024 9:30am - 10:40am CDT
Teaching anything related to fractions is difficult, especially when students have not built fluency with whole numbers. This means that extra support may be necessary to help students acquire the concepts and procedures needed to work with fractions. The Concrete-Representation-Abstract (CRA) sequence of instruction allows educators to preplan scaffolded supports that guide students towards abstract understanding during the acquisition stage of learning.  This session will provide teachers with an explicit, set-based model for computing with fractions that they can use during core instruction or intervention to support students’ learning.

Connections over Compliance: Rewiring our Perceptions of Discipline through an Educator and Leadership Lens
Thursday September 12, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT
We will explore discipline protocols from the lens of neuroscience. We will address specific shifts within the traditional and brain-aligned models and practices. We will begin to understand that traditional discipline works the best for kids who need it the least and works the least for kids who need it the most. When we are dysregulated, our brains do not respond to words, lectures, consequences, or rewards.  Relational discipline is not something we do to children, it is something we want to create within them. Syntax and Cohesive Ties: Missing Links in Comprehension and Written Expression
Thursday September 12, 2024 11:00am - 12:10pm CDT

The Right Math Instruction at the Right Time!
Thursday September 12, 2024 1:30pm - 2:40pm CDT
Teaching well and increasing student achievement is not simply about finding good instructional practices.  We must apply the right strategies at the right time, or students will not grow.  The Instructional Hierarchy gives us a framework for understanding students’ learning as a progression and matching instructional practices to their unique needs at each stage.  This session will introduce educators to the Instructional Hierarchy and how to match instructional strategies to increase mathematics achievement.

Beyond the Flashcard: Foundations and Practices for Building a Large Sight Word Vocabulary for Students
Thursday September 12, 2024 1:30pm - 2:40pm CDT
